What a Google Maps rank checker actually shows you

Short answer

A Google Maps rank checker shows where your business ranks in map results from different points across your service area, not just from one location. Our geo-grid tool runs real searches from each cell of a grid around your business and plots the position Google returns at that spot — so you can see exactly which neighbourhoods you own and where visibility drops off. It's free, and no signup is needed to run a scan.

Why is my Google Maps ranking different in different places?
Distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors, alongside relevance and prominence. Every map search is answered from the searcher's location, so a business ranking #1 at its own front door can be invisible three miles away. That is why a single rank check is misleading — the grid shows the real picture across the whole area you serve.
How accurate is a geo-grid scan?
Each cell runs a real Google search geolocated to that point, so the positions are what a searcher standing there would see for that keyword at that time. Rankings fluctuate through the day and by device, so treat the grid as a reliable map of strong and weak zones rather than a fixed scoreboard.
How often should I check my map rankings?
Monthly is enough for most businesses — local rankings move on the scale of weeks, not hours. Scan before you start any local SEO work to fix a baseline, then re-scan on the same keyword and grid size so the comparison is honest.
My grid shows red cells. How do I fix them?
Weak cells usually mean weak signals for that area: thin citations, an under-optimised Google Business Profile, or competitors with more reviews closer to that point. Citation building and cleanup raise the floor across the whole grid; for stubborn zones, Google Map stacking adds geo-relevant signals aimed at the exact area you're losing.

If the grid shows you losing ground, that's usually a citations problem first — see how our manual citation service fixes it.
