List of Free USA Business Listings

List of free USA business listing and citation sites
Short answer
The most valuable free USA business listings are Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, followed by Yelp, Facebook, Yellow Pages (YP.com), the Better Business Bureau and Foursquare. Underneath those sits the layer most guides skip entirely: the data aggregators — Data Axle, Neustar Localeze and Foursquare’s developer feed — which license your business data onward to hundreds of other platforms automatically.

The United States has the deepest local directory ecosystem in the world, and also the most junk. Thousands of directories exist; perhaps sixty matter. The difference between an effective citation campaign and a wasted one is almost entirely about which layer of that ecosystem you spend your time on.

Every entry in the list below was checked before publication. Directories whose domains have stopped resolving have been removed rather than left in place — Kudzu, once a fixture of every US citation list, no longer resolves at all.

Key takeaways
  • 174 verified US and universal citation sources, 170 free to submit to.
  • Fix the aggregator layer early — it propagates to platforms you will never submit to manually.
  • Suite and unit numbers are the single most common source of duplicate US listings.
  • In competitive metros, review volume on Yelp and Google is doing more work than directory count.
  • Home services businesses should treat Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack and Houzz as lead channels first and citations second.

What does local citation listing mean?

A citation is any online reference to your business name, address and phone number — the combination usually abbreviated to NAP. It does not require a link. Google treats each consistent occurrence as corroboration that your business exists where you claim it does, and each conflicting occurrence as a reason to trust your data less.

That framing explains why the tactic that feels productive — submitting to as many directories as possible — is often counterproductive. Every listing you create is a record you are now responsible for keeping accurate.

What are USA business listings and directories?

US listings sort into five tiers. Work down them in order; do not skip to tier four because it feels like more progress.

Tier 1 — Search and map platforms

Google Business Profile (renamed from Google My Business in 2021), Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. These decide whether you appear in the map pack, in Apple Maps on every iPhone, and increasingly in AI assistants drawing on Bing’s index. Nothing else in this article matters if these three are wrong.

Tier 2 — Data aggregators

Data Axle, Neustar Localeze and Foursquare. These are wholesale rather than retail: they supply business data to navigation systems, apps, and smaller directories. Foursquare alone feeds Apple, Uber and Snapchat. A correction here can silently fix dozens of listings elsewhere, and an error here silently creates them.

Tier 3 — Major national directories and review platforms

Yelp remains genuinely influential in US consumer behaviour in a way it is not in the UK. Yellow Pages (YP.com), the Better Business Bureau, Facebook, MapQuest and Nextdoor round out the tier. Nextdoor is underrated for genuinely neighbourhood-level businesses.

Tier 4 — Vertical and home-services platforms

Angi (formerly Angie’s List, merged with HomeAdvisor), Thumbtack, Houzz and Porch. For contractors and home services these are lead sources first and citations second — the economics are different from a directory listing.

Tier 5 — B2B and the long tail

Dun & Bradstreet, ZoomInfo, your local Chamber of Commerce, plus Superpages, DexKnows, Citysearch, Manta, Hotfrog, MerchantCircle and Local.com. Worth doing, low individual impact. A local Chamber listing is often the strongest link in this group.

The suite-number problem
More US duplicate listings are caused by inconsistent unit designators than by anything else. “Suite 200”, “Ste 200”, “#200” and a blank field are four different records as far as some directories are concerned. Pick one format, write it down, and never deviate — including in the second address line.

Top 150+ local USA business listing sites

Here is the working list — 174 verified sources spanning the universal platforms and the US-specific layer. Filter to free submissions only, or sort by domain authority to decide your order of attack. Authority scores are approximate and drift; treat them as relative priority.

Advantages of using USA business listing sites

Improve your online visibility

Directory category pages rank for “service + city” searches that your own site may struggle to reach, particularly if your domain is new. Being present on those pages puts you in front of searchers who never reach page one organically.

Increase qualified website traffic

Directory traffic is small in volume but high in intent — someone browsing a plumber category page in your city is much closer to buying than a general search visitor.

Attract more customers through review surfaces

Yelp, Google and BBB profiles are where US buyers verify a business before calling. A complete profile with recent reviews converts; an empty or unclaimed one creates doubt.

Strengthen local SEO fundamentals

Consistent NAP data across the aggregator and directory layers is what gives Google confidence in your location — one of the three factors it uses for local ranking, alongside relevance and distance.

Cost-effective compared with advertising

The core listings are free and permanent. Unlike paid search, a citation profile does not stop working when the budget stops.

How US local rankings actually work

Google is explicit that local results come from three factors, and it is worth knowing which ones citations can and cannot influence.

FactorWhat it meansCan citations help?
RelevanceHow well your business matches the searchYes — consistent categories and service data reinforce what you do
DistanceHow far you are from the searcherNo — nothing changes your physical location
ProminenceHow well known and established you areYes — citations, reviews and links all contribute

This is why citation work has a ceiling. It removes a handicap and builds prominence, but it cannot make you closer to the searcher. In dense metros, that distance factor is why the business four blocks away outranks you for a query you both serve — our free Google Maps rank checker plots exactly where that drop-off starts across your service area.

Building US citations without creating duplicates

  • Standardise your NAP first. One name, one address format including the unit designator, one primary phone number. Write it down before you submit anything.
  • Search before submitting. Aggregator data means listings for your business probably already exist on platforms you have never visited. Claim those records rather than creating second ones — it is the step our local citation service runs before a single new submission goes out.
  • Start at the aggregators. Correcting Data Axle and Neustar Localeze early means downstream directories inherit good data instead of bad.
  • Verify by phone or postcard where offered. Verified listings survive moderation and data refreshes; unverified ones get overwritten.
  • Keep a tracking sheet. Directory, listing URL, login, date. You will need it the first time you change your phone number.

Mistakes that waste US citation budgets

  • Using a PO box or unstaffed virtual office. A frequent cause of Google Business Profile suspension, and hard to appeal.
  • Keyword-stuffed business names.“Best Austin TX Roofing Contractor LLC” is a guidelines violation. Use the name on your signage.
  • Bulk submission packages. Five hundred listings on dead directories is not a citation profile, it is a cleanup project you paid for.
  • Ignoring duplicates. Two records for one location compete with each other. Merge or remove rather than leaving both — that is what citation cleanup exists for.
  • Treating it as one-off. Every address change, phone change or rebrand means revisiting the whole profile.

Frequently asked questions

Are free USA business listings actually worth it, or should I pay?
The free tier covers everything that affects rankings. Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Facebook and the major directories all offer free listings, and a free listing is indexed identically to a paid one. Paid upgrades buy placement, advertising or lead volume on that specific platform — they are a marketing decision, not an SEO requirement.
What is a data aggregator and why does it matter more than a directory?
Aggregators such as Data Axle and Neustar Localeze compile business data and license it onward to hundreds of apps, directories and in-car navigation systems. Correcting your record at the aggregator level can fix dozens of downstream listings you never submitted to, which is why aggregators are worth more attention than any individual small directory.
Do I need a physical address to get listed in US directories?
Google Business Profile allows service-area businesses to hide their street address, and most major platforms now support this. What you cannot use is a PO box, a virtual office you do not staff, or a mailbox service — those violate Google's guidelines and are a common cause of suspension. If you have no eligible address, run as a service-area business.
How long before citations affect my rankings?
Expect weeks, not days. Submission is instant but verification, moderation queues and re-crawling all add delay, and aggregator data propagates downstream on its own schedule — sometimes a full quarter. Citation work is foundational rather than fast; it removes a ceiling rather than producing an immediate jump.
What is the difference between Angi and the old Angie's List?
They are the same company. Angie's List was rebranded to Angi in 2021 after merging with HomeAdvisor under Angi Inc. Older citation lists still reference 'Angies List' as a separate site — if you see that, the list has not been maintained. Home service businesses should claim their Angi profile and treat HomeAdvisor as part of the same ecosystem.

Operating in other markets? The same re-verified treatment exists for the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, along with a universal international list. For the underlying concepts, see our guide to local citations and what local SEO is and why it matters.
