Australia has a compact directory market. That is an advantage — the realistic list is short enough to complete properly rather than sample — but it also means the few directories that matter carry more individual weight than any single site does in the United States.
Every entry below was checked before publication. One correction from earlier versions of this list: WOMO has moved, with womo.com.au now redirecting to wordofmouth.com.au, so that is where the listing belongs.
- 158 verified Australian and universal citation sources, 158 free to submit to.
- Have your ABN ready — many Australian directories verify it, and it is required for a .com.au domain.
- Use your real suburb in the address field; Australians search by suburb far more than by city.
- Yellow Pages AU and White Pages AU records usually pre-exist — claim rather than duplicate.
- Oneflare and ServiceSeeking are paid lead marketplaces, not citations. Judge them on cost per lead.
What does local citation listing mean?
A local citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number. It does not need to include a link to count. Google reads these mentions as independent corroboration of your business data — consistent mentions increase confidence in your location, and contradictory ones reduce it.
That makes citation building an exercise in accuracy rather than accumulation. The objective is that every listing agrees with every other listing.
What are the Australian business directories?
They fall into four groups, and the distinction between the third and fourth matters financially.
- Search and map platforms — Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect. The surfaces customers actually use.
- National directories — Yellow Pages Australia, White Pages Australia, True Local, Localsearch, StartLocal, Hotfrog Australia, dLook, Pure Local. The core citation layer.
- Review platforms — Word of Mouth, Yelp Australia, Trustpilot, Google reviews. Word of Mouth is distinctly Australian and well trusted for services.
- Lead marketplaces — Oneflare, ServiceSeeking, Airtasker-adjacent platforms. These charge for leads or quotes. Useful, but a different budget line from citations.
Why list your business on Australian directory sites?
Beyond the ranking argument, three things make directory listings unusually effective in Australia.
- Suburb-level search behaviour.Australians overwhelmingly search “electrician Bondi” rather than “electrician Sydney”. Directory category pages are built around exactly that structure, so they rank for the searches your own site may never reach.
- Geographic concentration. With most of the population in a handful of metros, competition inside those metros is intense — and the distance factor in local ranking means fundamentals need to be flawless. Our free Google Maps rank checker shows how far your visibility actually reaches across a metro.
- ABN verification as a trust layer. Because credible Australian directories check ABNs, a verified listing carries more weight than in markets with no equivalent check.
Top Australian business listing sites
1. Google Business Profile
Renamed from Google My Business in 2021 and still the listing that decides whether you appear in the map pack. Set your suburb accurately and choose the most specific primary category available.
2. Yellow Pages Australia
The most recognised Australian directory and the anchor of a local citation profile. Free listings are available; paid placement is a separate commercial question.
3. True Local
A long-established Australian directory with strong category and suburb pages, and review functionality. Free to claim.
4. White Pages Australia
Frequently already holds a record for established businesses, created from telephone data. Check and correct rather than adding a second entry.
5. Localsearch
Solid Australian directory with good regional coverage beyond the capital cities — useful for businesses outside the major metros.
6. Word of Mouth
Formerly WOMO, now at wordofmouth.com.au. A genuinely Australian review platform that carries weight for trades and personal services.
7. Bing Places and Apple Business Connect
Both free, both quick. Apple Maps is the default on every iPhone, and Bing’s index feeds a growing number of AI assistants.
8. Hotfrog Australia
Part of an international network with a reasonable Australian presence. Fast to complete.
9. StartLocal
A straightforward free Australian directory with usable category pages.
10. dLook and Pure Local
Smaller general directories. Worth adding once the tiers above are complete, low individual impact.

See how our citation service worksThe benefits of being listed in an Australian business directory
- Suburb-level visibility. Directory category pages rank for the service-plus-suburb searches Australians actually type.
- Corroborated location data.Consistency across the major directories is what builds Google’s confidence in where you are, feeding the prominence and relevance factors behind local rankings.
- Trust through ABN verification. Verified listings are treated more seriously by directories and customers alike.
- Qualified traffic. Low volume, high intent — someone on a suburb category page is close to calling.
- Longevity. An accurate listing keeps working long after an ad campaign ends.
Building Australian citations without creating duplicates
- Standardise first. One trading name, one address including suburb and state, one postcode, one primary phone number in a consistent format. Have your ABN ready.
- Audit Yellow Pages and White Pages first. These records often already exist. Claim them rather than submitting alongside them — and if wrong or duplicated records are already out there, start with citation cleanup before building anything new.
- Decide service area versus street address. If you travel to customers and do not receive them, run as a service-area business and avoid publishing a home address across dozens of sites.
- Work in tier order. Map platforms, national directories, review platforms, then evaluate lead marketplaces separately on their economics.
- Track what you build. Directory, URL, login, date. Invaluable the first time you move premises.
